Choose what flag?

I've been thinking long and hard about what the new template should look like.. and I must say, I'm stumped for ideas. I was looking for pics that would identify us as Somalis, but the camels, people in traditional clothes and acacia tree pics seemed a little dull and overdone. Most other resource pages have some elements/colours of the country's flag...but we’ve two flags (please, no indignant mutterings about the existence/non-existence of Somaliland ;D). So I decided to make an experimental flag and make all parties happy… What do you guys think of that?

No worries SD, this is not going to be the header (unless there is a unanimous yey vote for it *wink*)

Heheheh Just like you FOC to make them the exact same size to reduce (any) controversy. :D

FOC oo maxaa ismaleeyse? :D Making a flag of your own. Hehehehe. I really think the template should reflect the culture. Don't worry about you not being able to do it in the next few weeks. Like you said this is all a work in progress there is no rush in perfection. ;)

FOC & SD...fantastic blog. It should take me a good while to read all the linked blogs. Great job.

FOC, the flag is rather hideous. Go for a simple black and white template is my advice.

FOC,

Great site you have created! I also liked the idea of authoring a blog template that could illustrate pictorially OUR common SOMALI culture. Nevertheless, I must say that I strongly disagree with you about the false notion of Somalia having two flags.

As far as I can tell, there is ONE Somali Nation, ONE Somalia; hence, ONE flag!

The secessionist madness in the North will not and should succeed. We must put that madness to a screeching end!

Keep up the good work bro... And as sister "Sleepdepraved" eloquently stated above “there is no rush in perfection”. You'll get it right after much thought.

A blog update:

The links have gone AWOL. Relax, its not me meddling with the template, blogrolling (the site that sorts our links) is having some technical difficulties.

Seems everyone is more in favour of a ‘culture’ based template as opposed to nationalist one. Cool.

Ainashe,

Thank you for your kind words and encouragement. I guess this is a good time as any to declare my ‘secessionist madness’. *laughs hysterically*.

I’m afraid I’m one of those people whose hopes of Somaliweyn got pissed on and washed away with seeing and reading about the events in the last two decades that have led to the current state. I support Somaliland and I see it as the way forward for both the people of the North and South.

I’m a sister by the way :)

^^^ behave young lady. I guess you will get to work on that cultural template :P

What ever template you use will work for your site coz it is already great site. By the way, the flag thing is kind a unique idea in some way, but at the same time might seem divisive to some. Otherwise the flag looks cool. Thanks for linking my Blogsite.. I truly appreciate.
Take care and enjoy life

...There are more than Two by the way!

SD and FoC, Sisters, Though the Flag is quite unique and eye-catching, i think it's best to leave it out. You can, instead, have some pictures that symbolize the Somali Culture - Something that we share in common instead of the flags!

Just a Suggestion!

^Good suggestion. Agree :)

Not a bad idea. Atleast it will be the virtual flag on the net for all Somali speaking people around the globe.

FOC,

Thank you very much for replying to my somewhat “short-sighted” note! I mean, Short-sighted in the sense that I hastily assumed that you was a “brother” (read: male). Yeah, I feel like I was caught red-handed in a crime! Needless to say, that crime is unfortunately the prevalent male chauvinism among the Somali male populace.

In retrospect, I think it would have been wiser if I did little bit more research before I rushed to judgment on your gender. And for that I say sincerely: “Xaal qaado walaalo!” with the hope that I will be forgiven!

For the record, I take a great pride for being “progressive” on gender issues! Indeed, I believe that everyone should be treated and rewarded on her/his own merits regardless of gender!

I think the argument you made is politically, philosophically and morally problematic to say the least, indeed, I am willing to go as far as saying that it is also un-Islamic, meaning that your argument contradicts the basic tenets of the Islamic faith.

I will come back to the political aspects of your arguments later in this note, but let’s start with the philosophical and moral issues.

It seems to me that you are saying that the south is having lots of political problems, hence, we; the northerners (I am from Hargaysa; borne and bread!) should leave the south alone! Taking this argument to its logical conclusion will mean, leaving your love ones behind when they are in need. Needless to say, I am sure you would agree with me that this is morally indefensible and indeed un-Islamic!

Politically, you mistaken seem to imply that the south is to blame for everything that went wrong in Somalia for that last three decades or so.

Despite the fact that Siad Barre was a brutal dictator, we cannot escape from the fact that members of his regime were both from the north and south. Indeed, the current regional president of Northern Somalia was a senior officer of the notorious NSS who is blamed for mass killings. Riyaale is believed to have orchestrated the biggest mass killing that took place in Berbera.

The leaders of both opposition parties were also involved in Siad Barre’s brutal regime and its political oppression. It is worth noting that neither of those men made any moral objections to what Siad Barre’s was doing! Indeed, all of them were loyal servants till the last minutes! Hence, one could argue they are as guilty as the dictator himself!

In any case, if we say today that the south is mess and we have to leave it for wolves to feed then you would agree with me that the same logic must be applied to Burco and Boorame since those regions are economically, political, and culturally backward compared to the people in Waqooyi Galbeed. Should we leave them alone?

With Best regards,

Oi FOC I believe you have being called to the podium. This could be just the very medium and outlet to let loose your political theories. Can't wait for your reply!

Ditch the combined flag idea! sorry I had to get that out of the way.

How about something we can all agree on. pictures of : Food, somthing that reflects our connection with islam, maybe some abstract pics....

or if you think it's a good idea..bloggers can submit pics.

whatever you decided I'm sure we'll love it. how can we not!
